Metal vs. Acetate Frames - What is the Best Choice For Me?

September 9, 2022

We all know frames come in many different colours, shapes and styles, but they’re also made of different materials.

The two main material options for spectacle frames are metal and acetate (plastic), both of which have advantages and disadvantages.

Here’s just a few advantages of metal and acetate frames:

Metal Frames

  • Adjustable nose pads – all metal frames will have some form of nose pads, two small plastic or silicone pads that sit on either side of your nose. These pads, unlike a moulded bridge, are adjustable, meaning the frame can be adjusted to fit your nose perfectly.
  • Light – metal frames can be lighter weight compared to acetate frames, especially when made from metals such as titanium or stainless steel.
  • Strong – stainless steel and titanium, as well as being super light, they are super strong. They are a great option for anyone who is a little tougher on their glasses.

Acetate Frames

  • Moulded nose bridge – having a moulded nose bridge distributes the weight of the frames evenly over your nose. This is great for someone who struggles with the pressure points on the side of their nose which can be aggravated by nose pads.
  • More colour – acetate is a thicker material, therefore, an acetate frame will be thicker than a metal frame, making them easier to incorporate more bright, fun colours and patterns into the frame.
  • Bold Look – acetate frames make a statement!

Of course, the above is only a small number of advantages to both options and depending on your preferred style, vision requirements and lifestyle, some advantages may become disadvantages.
