Caring for Your New Glasses

January 25, 2022

It’s such a great feeling when you first get your new glasses, they’re shiny and comfortable and your vision is just so clear.

So, how can you keep your glasses looking and feeling brand new for longer?

There are a few rules all glasses wearers should follow:

  • Always carry your prescription glasses and sunglasses in a case, “If they’re not on your face, they’re in the case!”.
  • Use both hands to put them on and take them off – this will help to maintain their correct shape.
  • Never place them lens down on a surface, or you risk scratching the lenses.
  • Do not leave your glasses in the car. The temperature in the car can become extremely hot and this heat can damage your lenses beyond repair, especially lenses with anti-reflection coatings.
  • Keep an eye on the screws that hold the frame together and, if you find one is loose, tighten it gently with a small screwdriver or bring your glasses into one of our practices for one of our qualified team to give them a once over.

Tips for cleaning your glasses

We’re always cleaning glasses in our practices, so we’ve had a lot of experience! There are a few things you can do to clean your glasses to ensure the longevity of the frames and keep them looking newer for longer:

  • Once a week, clean your glasses, frame and lenses with warm (not hot) soapy water. This helps to get any oils or dirt out from around the hard to reach places, like around the nosepads or hinges.
  • Clean your lenses regularly with a lens cleaning spray and microfibre cloth. Alternatively we also use special disposable wipes to clean lenses, which are handy to have in your car, hand bag or school bag.
  • Treat your glasses gently while cleaning, rough treatment can distort their shape or bend the nose pieces out of adjustment. If this happens, avoid trying to fix the problem yourself and drop into one of our practices instead. We have the tools and training to do a better and safer job.

Fogging up?

I'm sure everyone has experienced issues with lenses fogging up when wearing face masks, but it's not just limited to masks. Simple daily tasks, like opening the dishwasher when the cleaning cycle has just finished, or getting things out of the oven can cause your lenses to fog; it can be so frustrating! To combat this, we recommend using Zeiss AntiFOG spray and cloth which come in a handy kit and are available at our practices. This product has been thoroughly tried and tested by our staff, it truly does work!

We know that sometimes things just happen - what should you do if your lenses are scratched?

It’s difficult to see through scuffed and scratched lenses. If your glasses become scratched, the best thing to do is visit us as soon as possible so we can advise you of your options. Lenses purchased from us have up to 2 years of manufacturers warranty (this varies for different companies and issues), so the sooner you notify us of your concern, the more likely we will be able to utilise this warranty option.

We rely on our glasses for clear vision, but they also become part of our identity, part of our fashion, an extension of ourselves. Treat your glasses well and keep experiencing that new-glasses-feeling everyday!
