Screen time can become a bit of a habit in our household, so I’ve come up with a list of activities to encourage creativity, imagination, and outdoor time, without having to spend a fortune.
Spend some time in your yard, out in your neighbourhood on a walk, or at the park and simply tick off the items on the Outdoor Scavenger Hunt list as you find them. The great thing about this type of activity is that it can be varied for different age groups, so you can keep all the troops entertained. We’re all hot and bothered at this time of year, and with water restrictions in place for most of us, the days of running under the sprinkler to cool down are long gone. This doesn’t mean the kids have to miss out entirely though! Fill a couple of buckets with some water and place them around the backyard, give each child a large sponge to dip in the water, and you have Tag with a Difference. The child who is ‘it’ tries to dodge the thrown wet sponges – whoever manages to hit them becomes the new ‘it’.
Use our printable templates to make and design your own pretend glasses. Create as many pairs as you like, then choose your favourite to submit for our holiday competition and go into the draw to win one of three cool kids packs. Grab a picnic blanket, find a shady spot and do some cloud watching. Take turns at using your imagination to make up stories about what you can see in the clouds.
Bike riding is great exercise, and we all know how important is to get the kids to burn off their seemingly endless energy. We are very lucky to have some brilliant parks with bike-riding tracks in Toowoomba, why not load up the kids and the bikes and check one out.
