What Can I Expect At My Eye Test?

October 28, 2021

If you are a new patient to us, welcome!

For all new patients, we recommend a Comprehensive Consultation so we can gain an understanding of your vision and have a clear picture of your eye health.

What happens when you book your appointment?

Prior to your appointment we will send you a link via email or SMS to fill in a Welcome to Our Practice form. This form provides us with your personal details, lifestyle information and general health information, and also allows you to tell us your main reasons for booking your eye examination. By gathering this information before your appointment, we can save you time on the day and your Optometrist can provide you with more tailored recommendations.

What does the Optometrist check during your Comprehensive Consultation?

A Comprehensive Consultation is much more than just checking how well you can read the letters on the eye chart. During your consultation your Optometrist will:

  • Assess your vision

Your optometrist will assess how well you can see in the distance and when reading. If you have glasses or sunglasses you currently wear it is great if you can bring them along to your appointment, so that we can advise if there is any change to your prescription.

  • Advise on visual solutions

After assessing your vision, your optometrist will advise whether glasses or contact lenses would be of benefit to you and give recommendations on what lens design would suit your needs.  Our recommendation will also take into consideration your lifestyle and work requirements.

  • Perform an ocular health check

Intraocular pressure check (IOP) - to assess your risk, or monitor glaucoma.

Visual examination of the health of the front of the eye – to assess for dry eye symptoms, allergy symptoms, any eye irritation or cataract assessment and more.

Posterior eye health check (visual examination of the internal structures of the eye) - to assess for a number of conditions, including, but not limited to, glaucoma and macular degeneration. It is important to let your optometrist know if any eye conditions run in your family. If you are unsure, ask your family members before coming in to see us.

  • Take photographs of your retina

A photograph of the inside of your eye will be taken using an Optos Wide-Field Retinal Imaging machine. This image in then digitally stored so we can compare to future images allowing us to monitor for any changes.

What if you need further assessments or treatments?

If during your Comprehensive Consultation your Optometrist finds evidence of a condition requiring further assessment or treatments, we may schedule another consultation, or refer to an Ophthalmologist if necessary.
